Comparing Your Roofing System Options: Which Is Right for Your Home?

When it's time for a new roof, the number of choices can feel overwhelming. Shingles or tile? Standard or designer? Is a solar roof worth it? The right answer depends on your home's architecture, your budget, and how long you plan to stay. Here's a plain-English look at the main options we install, so you can walk into your roof replacement conversation already knowing the landscape.

Architectural Asphalt Shingles

By far the most popular choice, architectural (or "dimensional") asphalt shingles offer the best balance of cost, durability, and curb appeal. Premium lines from GAF and Malarkey carry strong wind and algae resistance and, when installed by a certified contractor, long manufacturer warranties. For most North Bay homes, this is the sensible default.

Designer & Synthetic Shingles

If you want the look of slate or cedar shake without the weight or maintenance, designer and synthetic shingles deliver a high-end appearance at a fraction of the cost of the real thing. They're a great fit for homes where architecture and resale value matter.

Tile Roofing

Concrete and clay tile suit many Bay Area and Mediterranean-style homes and can last for decades. Tile is exceptionally durable and fire-resistant — a real advantage in wildfire country — though its weight means your home's structure needs to support it. We'll confirm that as part of the assessment.

Flat & Low-Slope Systems

Modern homes, additions, and ADUs often have flat or low-slope sections that shingles can't protect. These need a dedicated membrane system built for standing water and proper drainage. If your project also involves decks or below-grade areas, our waterproofing work goes hand in hand with the roof.

Solar Roofing

Integrated solar roofing, like the GAF Timberline Solar system, combines energy production with a true, watertight roof — no bulky racked panels. It's a bigger upfront investment, but for homeowners planning to stay put and offset energy costs, it can be a compelling long-term play.

How to Choose the Right System

  • Budget & timeline: How long do you plan to stay in the home? Longer stays justify a bigger upfront investment.
  • Architecture: Your home's style and roof pitch narrow the field quickly.
  • Fire & climate: In the North Bay, fire resistance and coastal weather performance matter.
  • Warranty: The installer matters as much as the material — a manufacturer's best warranty is only available through certified contractors.
