Architectural Shingle

Also known as: dimensional shingle, laminated shingle, architectural asphalt shingle

An architectural shingle is a laminated asphalt shingle made of two or more shingle layers bonded together to create a dimensional, shadow-line appearance that looks like wood shake or slate. Architectural shingles are heavier, more wind-resistant, and longer-lived than the older 3-tab shingle they replaced, and they're the residential standard today on every GAF Master Elite roof we install.

Why it matters in the North Bay

The North Bay's wind events — winter Pacific storms in Marin, late-summer Diablo wind events east of the Mayacamas — separate good shingles from cheap ones. GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles carry a 130 mph wind warranty when installed by a Master Elite contractor with the LayerLock nailing pattern. That's the residential default we quote on every Marin and Sonoma re-roof unless the homeowner specifically asks for an SBS-modified upgrade or a tile/metal alternative.

Attic Ventilation

Also known as: roof ventilation, balanced ventilation, intake and exhaust ventilation

Attic ventilation is the balanced airflow system — intake at the soffits, exhaust at or near the ridge — that keeps the attic close to outside temperature and humidity. Proper ventilation extends shingle life by reducing deck temperature in summer and dries out the attic before condensation can rot the sheathing. Code requires roughly 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor, split roughly 50/50 between intake and exhaust.

Coastal Marin homes from Stinson to Sausalito sit in a humid microclimate; inland Sonoma summers push attic temperatures above 140°F. Both extremes shorten shingle life and trigger warranty denials when ventilation is undersized. We inspect every existing attic before quoting a re-roof and rebalance the intake/exhaust ratio when needed — usually by adding continuous ridge vent and unblocking soffit baffles that drywall insulators stuffed shut.

California Title 24

Also known as: Title 24, Title 24 Part 6, CA Energy Code, Building Energy Efficiency Standards

California Title 24, Part 6 — the Building Energy Efficiency Standards — is the state energy code that sets prescriptive requirements for new construction and replacement work, including roof reflectance and emittance values, attic insulation, building envelope air-tightness, and HVAC sizing. For roofing, Title 24 enforces cool-roof performance on most steep-slope re-roofs and full Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) listed product performance on low-slope re-roofs.

Why it matters in the North Bay

A Title 24 compliance form is part of every re-roof permit package we file in Marin and Sonoma jurisdictions. When the shingle we install doesn't carry a CRRC rating that meets the prescriptive path, we either change the shingle or document a performance-path calculation that compensates with attic insulation or radiant barriers. We handle that paperwork so the homeowner doesn't fail final inspection — but it's worth understanding that the code is enforced at permit time, not at warranty time.

Class A Fire Rating

Also known as: Class A roof, Class A assembly, fire-rated roof

A Class A fire rating is the highest level of roof fire resistance, awarded to roof assemblies (covering + underlayment + deck) that pass the ASTM E108 / UL 790 test sequence for spread of flame and burning-brand resistance. Class A is required for new construction and re-roofs in California Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones and is the assembly tier most insurance carriers now require to renew a homeowner policy in the North Bay.

Why it matters in the North Bay

After the 2017 Tubbs and 2019 Kincade fires, most of Marin and Sonoma County is now mapped as Wildfire Hazard Severity Zone — Moderate, High, or Very High. Insurance carriers have responded by writing new-business and renewal underwriting around Class A roof assemblies; non-rated legacy roofs like cedar shake are increasingly uninsurable. Every re-roof we sell in the North Bay defaults to a Class A assembly with documentation that homeowners can hand to their carrier.

Cool Roof

Also known as: reflective roof, CRRC-rated roof, Title 24 cool roof

A cool roof is a roof system rated to reflect solar radiation and shed absorbed heat efficiently — measured by solar reflectance (SR) and thermal emittance (TE) values published by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC). California's Title 24 energy code requires cool-roof performance on most new and replacement roofs above a defined slope. Cool roofs cut attic temperatures, lower cooling loads, and qualify for utility rebates.

Inland Sonoma and Petaluma summers regularly cross 95°F; a dark non-rated shingle deck pushes attic temps over 140°F and forces the HVAC system to run constantly. California enforces Title 24 cool-roof requirements at re-roof time, so a non-compliant roof can fail final inspection. We default-spec CRRC-listed shingles on Sonoma and inland Marin homes and document the rating in the permit package so the inspector clears it on the first walk.

Drip Edge

Also known as: eave drip, rake drip, drip edge flashing

Drip edge is the L-shaped metal flashing installed at the eaves and rakes of a roof. It directs water off the roof deck and into the gutter instead of letting it wick back under the shingles and rot the fascia. It's required by the International Building Code on most new roof installations and is a non-negotiable component of any GAF Master Elite system.

Why it matters in the North Bay

Older Marin and Sonoma homes built before drip edge was code-mandated often have rotted fascia and stained soffits — classic symptoms of decades of unmanaged eave drainage. Every re-roof we do in the North Bay includes new drip edge at both eaves and rakes, in a profile and color matched to the gutter run. It's a cheap part that prevents an expensive repair downstream.

GAF Golden Pledge Warranty

Also known as: Golden Pledge, GAF Golden Pledge, GAF top warranty

The GAF Golden Pledge Warranty is GAF's strongest residential roof warranty — manufacturer-backed coverage on materials, the installer's workmanship, and any tear-off and disposal costs if a covered defect requires replacement. Golden Pledge is only available through GAF Master Elite contractors who install a qualifying full GAF system, and it's transferable to a subsequent owner if the home is sold within the warranty period.

A roof warranty is only as strong as the entity standing behind it. A contractor-only workmanship warranty disappears the day that contractor goes out of business; a manufacturer-backed warranty like Golden Pledge stays in force because GAF — a publicly-traded multi-billion-dollar manufacturer — honors it directly. Also known as: Master Elite contractor, GAF Master Elite certification

GAF Master Elite is the highest tier of GAF's contractor certification program. Only roughly three percent of roofing contractors nationwide qualify — the certification requires proof of insurance, a minimum service history, ongoing installer training, and consistent customer satisfaction scores. Master Elite is the credential a homeowner needs to look for to access GAF's strongest warranty product, the Golden Pledge.

Why it matters in the North Bay

Most roofing companies that say they are 'GAF certified' are at the Authorized or Certified tier — the basic level any installer can self-enroll into. Master Elite is different: GAF audits financial health, license status, BBB complaints, and installer training every year, and any installation we do that doesn't meet the LayerLock nailing pattern and full system spec gets us bumped back down. Northern Pacific Roofing has maintained Master Elite continuously since 2008, which is what allows us to sell the Golden Pledge warranty on every residential re-roof.

Granule Loss

Also known as: shingle granule loss, balding shingles, granule shedding

Granules are the small ceramic-coated mineral particles bonded to the surface of an asphalt shingle. They block UV, add fire resistance, and protect the underlying asphalt binder. Granule loss is the gradual shedding of those particles — visible as bare black spots on the shingle, granule piles in gutters, or accumulation at downspout exits. Severe granule loss is the clearest visual signal that an asphalt roof is at the end of its service life.

Why it matters in the North Bay

Heavy late-season UV in Sonoma and the Petaluma corridor accelerates granule loss; coastal Marin's salt air and condensation cycles do the same on the windward side of west-facing roofs. When we inspect, we look for both general thinning AND localized bald spots — bald spots often indicate failed flashing or sustained ponding above, not just normal aging. Documenting granule loss with photos is also how we trigger many GAF Golden Pledge warranty conversations.

Ice & Water Shield

Also known as: ice and water shield, self-adhered membrane, self-adhering bituminous membrane

Ice & Water Shield is a self-adhered rubberized-asphalt membrane installed in roof areas where water is most likely to back up: along eaves, in valleys, around skylights and chimneys, and at wall-roof intersections. It seals around nail penetrations and creates a watertight barrier even if the primary roof covering is breached, lifted, or compromised in a storm.

Why it matters in the North Bay

We don't fight ice dams in Marin like roofers in the Sierra do, but we do fight wind-driven rain that pushes uphill under shingles during atmospheric-river storms. We install Ice & Water Shield along every eave and in every valley on our re-roofs — and around all penetrations on lower-slope sections — because that's where North Bay leaks actually start. It's also required by the GAF Master Elite specification, which is the warranty tier we install to.

Northern Pacific Roofing has been Malarkey Emerald Certified since 2016. The certification matters because Malarkey's stock differs structurally from standard asphalt shingle — the SBS rubberization is what makes the shingle perform in North Bay temperature swings, and improper installation (especially nail placement and exposure) voids the rubber's benefits. The Emerald certification proves the install crew has been trained on Malarkey's exact spec, and it's the credential that lets us back the work with the Malarkey Emerald Premium Warranty.

PVC Single-Ply Roofing

Also known as: PVC roof, single-ply membrane, heat-welded PVC, PVC flat roof

PVC single-ply roofing is a flat-roof system made of polyvinyl-chloride membrane installed in wide sheets and heat-welded at every seam to form a continuous, fully-bonded waterproof barrier. Modern PVC roofs are reinforced with fiberglass scrim for dimensional stability and rated for 20-to-30-year service life. PVC is the system we specify on commercial flat roofs and multi-family/HOA buildings in place of legacy TPO and EPDM.

Marin and Sonoma multi-family buildings, HOA properties, and small commercial flat roofs are the kind of structures where seam failure is the dominant leak mode — and PVC's heat-welded seams are the single best answer to seam failure available in the flat-roof category. We moved off TPO and EPDM in our standard commercial spec because heat-welded PVC is more predictable to install in cool, marine-layer mornings and easier to repair years later when a single-ply punctures from foot traffic or HVAC service work.

Roof Slope (Pitch)

Also known as: roof pitch, slope, 12:12, 4:12, 2:12

Roof slope (also called pitch) is the ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run, written as a fraction with a denominator of 12. A 4:12 slope rises four inches for every twelve inches horizontal. Slope drives which materials a roof can use: shingles need 2:12 minimum (with special underlayment) and prefer 4:12+; tile typically needs 4:12+; below 2:12 you're on a flat-roof system like PVC, modified bitumen, or built-up.

Hillside homes in Tiburon, Mill Valley, and west Marin often combine a steep 8:12 main roof with a low-slope addition or covered patio — and the two sections need completely different systems. Sloped runs get architectural shingle; the flat run gets a heat-welded PVC single-ply membrane or Westcoat ALX deck coating if it's a walking deck. We always measure both before quoting because a one-material spec on a mixed-slope roof is how leaks happen at the transition.

SBS-Modified Bitumen Shingle

Also known as: rubberized shingle, SBS modified shingle, polymer-modified asphalt shingle, Malarkey rubberized shingle

SBS-modified bitumen shingles are asphalt shingles whose binder is blended with styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) rubber polymers, giving the finished shingle the flexibility and impact resistance of rubber while keeping the workability of asphalt. SBS shingles flex with temperature swings instead of cracking, hold granules longer, and resist hail and wind-driven debris better than standard architectural shingles.

Malarkey's Vista AR and Legacy lines are the SBS-modified shingles we install on Northern Pacific Roofing's Malarkey Emerald systems. The North Bay's seasonal temperature swings — 50°F overnight summer drops in valley towns like Glen Ellen and Petaluma — make traditional asphalt shingles brittle at the edges over time. The SBS rubber blend solves that. It's also why Malarkey shingles are graded for hail-prone markets, which translates here as branch-impact and wind-borne-debris resilience in storm events.

Step Flashing

Also known as: sidewall flashing

Step flashing is a series of small rectangular metal pieces installed one-per-shingle-course where a sloped roof meets a vertical wall. Each piece is woven between shingle layers and lapped behind the wall covering so water moving down the wall is redirected onto the next shingle, not into the wall cavity. Step flashing is the correct treatment for sidewall intersections; continuous flashing is a defect.

Roof-to-wall intersections are the single most common leak source we find on Marin home inspections — especially on additions and dormers where prior contractors used a continuous flashing strip or relied on caulk. Caulk fails in three years; properly woven step flashing works for decades. Every Northern Pacific Roofing re-roof rebuilds the step-flashing course-by-course rather than reusing existing flashing.

Tear-Off vs Overlay

Also known as: complete tear-off, roof-over, shingle overlay

Tear-off means stripping the old roof down to the deck before installing the new system; overlay means leaving the existing shingle in place and installing a new layer over the top. Tear-off is the only method that exposes the deck for inspection and replacement, supports a manufacturer's top-tier warranty, and is allowed under most California jurisdictions for second-layer roofs. Overlay is faster and cheaper but trades inspection access and warranty eligibility for a short-term cost saving.

Marin's older housing stock — Mid-Century homes in San Anselmo, post-war bungalows in Petaluma — almost always reveals deck rot, knob-and-tube wiring, or undersized sheathing once the shingles come off. Overlay hides those problems. We do tear-off on every re-roof and replace any deck plywood that doesn't pass our hand-press test, then we document the deck condition photographically before the new underlayment goes down. That documentation is what makes the GAF Golden Pledge warranty enforceable.

Underlayment

Also known as: roofing underlayment, roofing felt, synthetic underlayment

Underlayment is the secondary water-resistant barrier installed directly over the roof deck, beneath shingles or tile. It protects the structure if water gets past the primary roof covering and gives crews a safer walking surface during installation. Modern synthetic underlayments are the standard on residential roofs; older 15-pound and 30-pound asphalt felt are still allowed by code but underperform synthetics in tear strength, UV exposure, and slip resistance.

Marin and Sonoma County roofs see horizontal rain in winter storms and intense UV during dry-season tear-offs. A synthetic underlayment that can sit exposed for several days mid-project is the difference between a controlled re-roof and a soaked attic. We install synthetic underlayment on every Northern Pacific Roofing system because the North Bay's weather windows don't always cooperate with shingle-delivery schedules.

Westcoat ALX Deck Coating

Also known as: ALX system, deck coating, waterproof deck, walk deck coating, Westcoat

The Westcoat ALX system is a fluid-applied, fiberglass-reinforced waterproof deck coating engineered for walking decks, balconies, and stairs over occupied or living space below. It bonds to plywood substrate, embeds a fiberglass mesh layer for crack resistance, and finishes with a UV-stable colored topcoat that's slip-rated for foot traffic. ALX is rated for residential walking decks under SB 326 and SB 721 California balcony inspection laws.

California's SB 326 and SB 721 require periodic inspection and waterproofing of elevated exterior elements — exactly the upper balconies and walking decks common on Marin and Sausalito hillside homes and multi-family buildings throughout the North Bay. Westcoat ALX is the system we install on those decks because it's manufacturer-certified, code-compliant, and we're trained on the full install spec. Most deck-leak service calls we get involve a homeowner-installed deck-sealer product that failed in 18 months; ALX is built to last 15+ years with proper recoats.
